Really, if I had cause for concern I would read. I find it interesting how so many people say they would never - yet I wonder how true that really is? I’m inclined to agree that sometimes ‘rules are made to be broken’ - The important thing, really, is to find a way to convey the reasoning behind the rules: safety, health, consideration for others, etc. And in the end, that surely helps a child to weigh the importance of various rules when two or more rules are in conflict (as will surely happen at some point) and make better life-decisions as they mature and gain independence. It’s a challenge for the parent, to be sure!

This is exactly what’s been on my mind lately as well. They’re kids, and we have to remember that. I don’t want to be militaristic and have their every action be proper and appropriate. But I don’t want them running around loose like maniacs and talking back either! Nice post.

With 2 teenage daughters (15 & almost 18) I’ve never felt a need or even a small curiosity to read their private thoughts, posts or notes. We do have a very open line of communication, so maybe that’s why. I have 2 young boys, maybe things will be different with them.. but I doubt it. My sd thought it was OK to go through my stuff and it left a deep resentment.

Very useful article. I especially like the attention you have drawn to the aspect of teaching them life skills. During the past weekend, my children (6 and 4 years respectively) insisted on cleaning the living room window. I cannot forget the pride in their eyes when we hugged them tight, once they were done with that. You have finely articulated what we felt after that moment.

Good post, Hope. My daughter is five and helps with washing the car (which is mostly just water play) and folding the clothes (which she does very well). I am thinking of starting her on the washing up soon, but I need a safe step-stool for the sink first.

Glad you like it, Cindy, Angela. I was reminded of this earlier this year when I went on a trip without the family to help a friend, but ended up feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
